The Wrecking Crew by Kent Hartman

Bestseller!

LA Times Bestseller! The Wrecking Crew by Kent Hartman Did you know that hundreds of famous songs in the 60s and 70s weren’t recorded by the bands who made them famous? For the first time, music insider, historian and debut author, Kent Hartman, tells the definitive story of the unknown group of sidemen who secretly played all the instruments on hit after hit in the new book, The Wrecking Crew: The Inside Story of Rock and Roll’s Best-Kept Secret (Thomas Dunne Books, an imprint of St. Martins Press; February 14, 2012; ISBN: 978-0-312-61974-9; $25.99 Hardcover). Everyone from the Byrds to the Beach Boys, from Phil Spector and Simon & Garfunkel to the Fifth Dimension and even Frank Sinatra, hired this stealth-like group of West Coast studio musicians—sometimes over the heated objections of actual band members who were forced to make way for Wrecking Crew musicians in the studio. Hartman follows the recording careers of such session musicians as drummer Hal Blaine and trailblazing bassist Carol Kaye, as well as those of several Wrecking Crew players who eventually went on to fame in their own right, including Glen Campbell, Leon Russell, and Jim Gordon (who co-wrote “Layla” with Eric Clapton). Part Hit Men and part Laurel Canyon, this hidden history of rock and roll chronicles the uncredited studio musicians who provided the soundtrack for a generation.

Task Force Patriot by Lieutenant Colonel Pat Proctor

December 31, 2011 marks the end of the Iraq War, when the US will enact a near total troop withdrawal from Iraq. Now several questions must be answered: Was this war worth the huge amount of dollars spent and lives lost? Or has it all been in vain? Should the US continue to maintain a troop presence in Iraq? Or should we leave the Iraqis to settle their disputes for themselves? Lieutenant Colonel Pat Proctor, an active-duty military officer with two tours in Iraq, brings in his insider perspective as operations officer of Task Force Patriot—the last battalion to occupy Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit during combat operations—to uncover the often hidden truths of the Iraq war. In his new book, Task Force Patriot and the End of Combat Operations in Iraq (Government Institutes, December 2011, 978-1-60590-777-2, $29.95, Hardcover), Proctor tells the story of an artillery-turned-infantry battalion that arrived in Iraq in late summer 2009, and found itself in a unique position to turn the tide of the Iraq war.

David Margolick, author of Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock

Elizabeth and HazelThe names Elizabeth Eckford and Hazel Bryan Massery may not be well known, but the image of them from September 1957 surely is: a black high school girl, dressed in white, walking stoically in front of Little Rock Central High School, and a white girl standing directly behind her, face twisted in hate, screaming racial epithets. This famous photograph captures the full anguish of desegregation, in Little Rock and throughout the South, and became, in and of itself, an epic moment in the civil rights movement. In Elizabeth and Hazel: Two Women of Little Rock (Yale University Press; publication date October 4, 2011; $26 hardcover), acclaimed author and journalist David Margolick relates the remarkable story—told here in full for the first time—of two separate lives unexpectedly braided together for more than half a century by a single image. And at the same time he portrays these two exemplary individuals, Margolick reveals how an entire era was and is illuminated by an exposure lasting a sixtieth of a second.

Michael Calce, author of Mafiaboy

Mafiaboy by Michael CalceIn Mafiaboy: A Portrait of the Hacker as a Young Man (Lyons Press; August 13, 2011; ISBN: 978-0-7627-7055-7; $22.95; Hardcover), by Michael Calce with Craig Silverman, Michael Calce reveals, for the first time, how his prodigious talent for unraveling and manipulating computer technology evolved into a teenage obsession. Shuttled between the homes of his divorced parents in suburban Montreal and regarded by his teachers as a poor and problem student, Calce found a sense of belonging and power through joining a gang of hackers. He launched his virtual “Rivolta” (Italian for riot) to establish dominance for himself and his dynamite hacking crew, TNT/PHORCE.  Calce had no idea that his hubris-fueled project would cost his targets millions of dollars in lost traffic. Or that it would spur President Clinton to hold a cybersecurity summit and enlist the FBI, in partnership with Canadian authorities, in a manhunt for the culprit.

Lisa Bloom, author of Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World

New York Times Bestseller!

Award winning journalist, television legal analyst, trial attorney and daughter of renowned women’s rights attorney Gloria Allred, Lisa Bloom, publishes her first book book, Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World (Vanguard Press; June 1, 2011; ISBN: 978-1-59315-659-6; $25.99; Hardcover), which boldly argues that the women of today represent a stark paradox. In Think, Lisa showcases that while girls and women shine in many areas (such as outperforming boys at every level of education, preschool through grad school); they have concurrently lost focus and even regressed in some frightening ways. At a time when 23% of women would rather lose their ability to read than their figures, Lisa fears that women are in danger of spiraling into a nation of dumbed-down, tabloid media-obsessed, reality TV addicts. For example, the majority of us can’t name a single branch of government, but nearly everyone can name at least one Kardashian. In this entertaining, eye-opening and thoroughly-researched new book, Lisa outlines the ways that we as a society, and particularly women, have allowed our brains to atrophy and, very specifically, outlines the damage our ignorance is causing to our personal lives, our nation, and our world.

Steven Schussler, author of It’s a Jungle in There: Inspiring Lessons, Hard-Won Insights, and Other Acts of Entrepreneurial Daring

Steven Schussler, award-winning entrepreneur and founder of the Rainforest Cafe™, has achieved enormous success while having a blast creating new ways to make his customers happy. In his publishing debut, It’s a Jungle in There: Inspiring Lessons, Hard-Won Insights, and Other Acts of Entrepreneurial Daring (Sterling Publishing; September 2010; ISBN: 978-1-4027-6289-5; Hardcover; $19.95), Schussler shares his proven formula for a rewarding business and life, along with stories of his wild (and sometimes crazy) adventures in pursuit of his dreams.

Steven Schussler has donned a Superman suit and sealed himself in a barrel, hoisted himself on a crane outside a CEO's 6th-floor office window, and turned his split-level suburban home into a rain forest—complete with mist rising from the ground, free-flying tropical birds, and a full-scale model of an elephant. Being wild and creative is the way he chases his dreams of success—and he wants you to chase your dreams with the same passion too. In his new book, It’s a Jungle in There, Schussler shares stories of his bold adventures and the core business principles behind them.

As Schussler stresses, he owes everything he has achieved to what he calls the five Ps of success: Personality, Product, Persistence, People, and Philanthropy. In It’s a Jungle in There, he shows anyone with an entrepreneur’s dream and drive how to learn and practice them, while taking time to laugh along the way. “My professional life has been a roller-coaster ride, but it’s been a fun one,” the award-winning founder of the Rainforest Cafe attests.

Janie Johnson, author of Don’t Take My Lemonade Stand: An American Philosophy

In her new book, Don’t Take My Lemonade Stand: An American Philosophy (Bascom Hill Publishing Group; September 2010; ISBN: 978-1-935098-29-4; Hardcover; $24.95), Janie Johnson helps everyday American citizens understand the difference between what works and what merely sounds good, stay informed about critical issues, and teach our children why America is great. Her motivation for writing was sparked when her ten-year-old son Sammy asked her a question, “How do you know who to vote for?” During her futile search for a comprehensive guide to provide the answer, Johnson began to suspect that many parents were grappling to answer that same question—for themselves as well as for their children.

“Most of us need to get up to speed and more involved in nearly all matters political,” says Johnson. “If we and our kids don’t understand and participate in the political system, we could all too easily become victims of it.”

Lars Kroijer, author of Money Mavericks: Confessions of a Hedge-Fund Manager

In Money Mavericks: Confessions of a Hedge-Fund Manager (Financial Times Prentice Hall; ISBN 978-0-273-73198-6; November 9, 2010; Paperback Original), author and industry insider Lars Kroijer shatters common misconceptions with a balanced, candid account of his personal hedge fund experience. In the spring of 2002, soon after his 30th birthday, Kroijer left a well-paid, relatively safe job with an established investment firm to start his own hedge fund. Within five years, his determination and tireless work paid off. Without any institutional backing, he took Holte Capital from a humble, London-based startup to a profitable medium-sized hedge fund, investing about $1 billion in the market. Then, in August 2007, one bold, big stock trade went bad—really bad. Unable to recover from the cascade of investor pull outs, Holte returned all remaining external capital and turned off the lights in February 2008. Money Mavericks is his story—the story of the life of a hedge fund and the price of success as a financial entrepreneur.

Diane Dimond, author of Cirque du Salahi: Be Careful Who You Trust — Written with Complete Cooperation with Michaele and Tareq Salahi

Veteran investigative reporter Diane Dimond has written a tell-all book about Michaele and Tareq Salahi, titled Cirque du Salahi: Be Careful Who You Trust, (on-sale exclusively at Amazon; September 15, 2010; Kindle ISBN: 978-1-61550-770-2 ($9.99) and Trade Paperback ISBN 1439273294 ($15.99). Cirque Du Salahi will reveal for the first time that for nearly 17 years Michaele Salahi has suffered from multiple sclerosis, not anorexia, as has been widely speculated. While the Salahis cooperated exclusively with Dimond to present their version of this explosive story, Diane Dimond maintained full editorial control and sole copyright. Cirque Du Salahi finally puts the salacious “Crasher” story to rest and shows how the media, led by “The Reliable Source” column at the Washington Post, got it wrong from the get-go. The book lays out in great detail when and how the Salahis were invited to both the White House and to the Congressional Black Caucus Dinner held weeks previously. Only now that the danger of a possible federal indictment has faded with time do they feel they can tell their side of the story.

In Cirque Du Salahi, the reader also learns that the Salahis have been supporters of Barack Obama since 2005. The book also offers the shocking fallout the Salahis have endured because of all the unfair negative publicity stirred up by the media. They have received death threats and been made the butt of relentless jokes on late-night TV. In one particularly harrowing episode, Michaele barely escaped flipping her car during a high speed chase with paparazzi. The mission of the book is to finally tell the whole story behind who Michaele and Tareq Salahi really are, to strip back the curtain to reveal the human toll created by today’s often reckless media coverage and to share with the American public Michaele Salahi’s stoic battle with multiple sclerosis.

Howard Gambrill Clark, Counter-Radicalization Expert and Author

How You Can Kill al-Qaeda (In 3 Easy Steps)A top counter-radicalization expert and critically acclaimed author, Howard Gambrill Clark believes the only way to crush al-Qa’ida is through empowering Muslims to exploit al-Qa’ida’s previously unrecognized weaknesses. In his new book, Revolt against al-Qa’ida (Light of New Orleans Publishing; October 2010; ISBN: 978-0-9827767-0-4; $14.95; Original Trade Paperback), Clark redefines al-Qa’ida as primarily a media group that inspires others to do its bidding. Howard Clark, decorated U.S. Marine Corps office, Yale graduate, current senior intelligence officer at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and expert in counter-ideology, has laid out—for the first time—a comprehensive plan empowering average citizens to help destroy global terrorism in How You Can Kill al-Qaeda (In 3 Easy Steps) How You Can Kill al Qaeda (In 3 Easy Steps). In just 67 pages, Clark outlines a straightforward strategy to permanently defeat al-Qaeda by attacking the terrorist’s group main strength: popular support. His tactics are focused on undermining al-Qaeda’s messaging and marketing capabilities, thereby hampering Osama bin Laden and company from recruiting new members and influencing the world. 100% of the author’s royalties from the book will be donated to Afghan Health & Development Services (www.ahds.org), a non-profit, non-governmental and non-political organization founded by Afghans, which trains medical staff and provides comprehensive healthcare services to those in need.

Toni Raiten-D’Antonio, author of Ugly as Sin

Ugly As Sin (HCI Books; ISBN 978-0-75731-465-0; September 2010; $21.95; Hardcover), by psychotherapist and professor Toni Raiten-D’Antonio, (author of The Velveteen Principles and The Velveteen Principles for Women), is the first comprehensive book on the social issue of ugliness. It examines its origins and reveals its impact on the lives of individuals. Ugly As Sin turns the meaning behind ugliness upside down, taking the power and stigma out of it by embracing it. No other book ranges so widely—from history to biology, social psychology and personal narrative—or plumbs the subject with such courage, compassion and empathy. Most importantly, Ugly As Sin offers a realistic prescription for overcoming the universal fear of appearance-based bigotry—“the ugliphobia syndrome”—and how it erodes our self-confidence, undermines our sense of self-worth, and, in some cases, leads to isolation, depression and even death. The book reveals how we all are bigots when it comes to ugliness, even turning this prejudice against ourselves. It also helps readers debunk outrageous beauty standards and then provides inspirational tools for finding hope, peace and fulfillment, regardless of appearance.

Neil Sedaka, Waking up Is Hard to Do

Waking up Is Hard to DoThe history of rock ’n’ roll would be incomplete without the innumerable contributions of Neil Sedaka. Neil’s “Breaking up Is Hard to Do” was first released in 1962 and quickly went to #1 on Billboard’s Top 100. If you remember the song, in either or both versions, you and your family are sure to smile when you hear the brand new rendition—the inspiration for a children’s book and companion CD entitled Waking up Is Hard to Do (Imagine Publishing, ISBN 978-1-936140-13-8; $17.95; September 2010), performed by Neil Sedaka, with illustrations by Daniel Miyares, and Music and Lyrics by Neil Sedaka and Howard Greenfield. It began as a web journal (www.DaysWithMyFather.com) of Edward’s days until his death in 2009, a week after his 99th birthday, and, much to the surprise and delight of the author, has become a global phenomenon. Attracting over one million visitors and counting (20,000 daily), the site has inspired over 200,000 comments—from sons longing to reconnect with their father after years of silence; from teenagers who came to see their parents or grandparents in a new light; from people whose parents died before they had the chance to say goodbye; and from adults vowing to spend more time with and take pictures of their parents.

He chronicles his experiences with players in strip clubs and how easy it is to get caught up in the fast lane. This is an expose of the seamy underbelly of professional sports as told through the story of Black’s own inspiring rise from poverty to become one of sports’ top super agents, representing superstars like Rae Carruth, convicted of conspiring in the murder of his girlfriend; Andre Rison, whose girlfriend Lisa “Lefteye” Lopes burned his mansion to the ground; the callous attitude of players like Sterling Sharpe and NBA star Vince Carter toward the casual girlfriends they got pregnant; and the hypocrisy and dirty tricks used by competing agents against Black to destroy his career, ultimately costing him his freedom and his thriving businesses. Prior to his conviction, Black also owned one of the largest minority travel agencies in the country and was positioning himself to buy the Philadelphia Eagles. This is a one-of-a-kind peek behind the curtain into the business and personalities involved in professional sports, the good, bad, and ugly.

Whitelines®

In April 2009 Whitelines®, the award-winning revolutionary stationery from Sweden, became available for the first time in the United States. Creator Olof Hansson, who received Sweden’s 2008 Innovator of the Year Award, created this new generation of paper, which features white ruled lines instead of the standard black or blue. The concept is simple: The dark lines of ordinary paper tend to interfere with the marking of pens and pencils; in contrast, Whitelines supports and showcases the composition or sketch because there is literally no visual “competition” between the lines on the paper and the written or artistic work on the page. Currently offered in notebook form, the product is available in various sizes and designs to accommodate any lifestyle or occupation. This innovative product is environmentally conscious and a learning tool for those with learning disabilities. It will be distributed in the US by Consortium, a sales and distribution company.

Mercer Square Block Association

Mercer Square Block Association fights pressure from New York University who plans on expanding an underground Power Plant on property they do not own, destroying 20 old-growth trees in the process. Although NYU has been negotiating with the Block Association, community organizations, and local political groups, NYU is overriding these talks in favor of what the Block Association feels is the wrong plan of action. In fact, NYU even has an alternative “hybrid option,” to the renovation, by commencing some of their construction under Gould Plaza—a totally man-made square—and some under their own property on Mercer. However, if NYU decides that all work should be carried out on Mercer, they could potentially cut off two out of three traffic lanes—and with another traffic upheaval in the works on Broadway, the Block Association feels as if all of the traffic and environmental havoc will fall on the dwellers of NOHO.
